M42 steel (W2Mo9Cr4VCo8) is high cobalt toughness high speed steel, mainly used for high toughness precision wear-resistant hardware cold stamping die, can also be used for cutting tools and knives cooling. High hardness of steel, up to 70HRC, good heat hardness, high temperature hardness, easy to grind. The cutting tools made of this steel can cut iron-based superalloy, cast superalloy, titanium alloy and ultra-high strength steel, etc., but the toughness is slightly poor, and the quenching temperature should adopt the lower limit. Because of its good grinding performance, it can be used to manufacture various high-precision complex cutting tools. W2Mo9Cr4VCo8 steel code M42. It is an American brand of ultra-hard cobalt high-speed tool steel. The mass fraction of vanadium in M42 steel is not high (1%), while the mass fraction of cobalt is high (8%). The steel has good hardness, heat rigidity, wear resistance and grinding property. The hardness of heat treatment can reach 67~70HRC, but there are also special heat treatment methods to obtain the hardness of 67~ 68HRC, so that the cutting performance (especially intermittent cutting) is improved, improve the impact toughness. The steel can be made into a variety of tools, cutting difficult to process materials when the effect is very good, and because of its good grinding performance. It can be made into complex cutting tools, but cobalt resources are scarce in China, and the price of cobalt high speed steel is expensive, about 5~8 times that of ordinary high speed steel. Domestic cobalt high speed steel has been improved in quenching and tempering hardness, thermal hardness, performance and other aspects, close to or reach the level of imported steel. Hardness ≥67HRC after quenching and tempering, uniformity ≤±0.5%. Product specifications: φ10~150mm, hot rolled, forged round steel, rectangular steel, square steel, forgings, etc. Organize production according to GB/T 9943-2008 standard or user requirement. Superhard speed steel is developed on the basis of synthesizing the advantages of high carbon and high vanadium high speed steel and high carbon and high cobalt high speed steel in order to meet the needs of machining difficult-to-cut materials, such as heat resistant alloys. Generally, hardness ≥64HRC when used. The process performance of the steel is better than that of M2Al steel, and the cold and hot working performance is better. The hardness after quenching and tempering is the same as that of M35 steel, which is (66±1)HRC.
High speed steel generally does not do tensile strength test, and to metallographic, hardness test mainly. After correct heat treatment, the hardness of tungsten and molybdenum HSS can reach above 63, and that of cobalt HSS can reach above 65. The acid - soaked low-power tissue of steel shall not have visible shrinkage holes and peeling. Center loose, generally loose should be less than 1 grade. The content of metallographic examination mainly includes three items: decarbonized layer, microstructure and carbide inhomogeneity. High speed steel should not be significantly decarbonized. According to the different uses of steel, different levels of carbide unevenness can be put forward, usually less than 3 levels. In addition to its high hardness, high wear resistance and enough toughness, another important factor in making cutting tools with high speed steel is its red hardness. Red hardness refers to the ability of the blade to resist softening in red heat when cutting at high speed. One way to measure the hardness of the steel is to heat it to 580 ~ 650℃, hold it for 1 hour, and then cool it. This is repeated four times before measuring its hardness value. The quenching temperature of high speed steel is generally close to the melting point of steel, such as 1210 ~ 1240℃ for tungsten high-speed steel and 1180 ~ 1210℃ for high molybdenum high-speed steel. After quenching generally need to temper between 540 ~ 560℃ for 3 times. Increasing quenching temperature can increase the hardness of steel. In order to improve the service life of high speed steel cutting tools, the surface can be strengthened, such as low temperature cyanidation, nitriding, sulfur nitriding, etc.
