Free Cutting Steel

 

Easy cutting steel is a type of steel that contains a small amount of easy-cutting elements, resulting in excellent machining performance. This steel utilizes specific elements to enhance its machinability for high-speed cutting on automatic machine tools. Commonly used elements to improve the machinability of easy cutting steel include S, Pb, Ca, etc., with sulfur (S) being the most frequently employed element. It forms MnS inclusions in the steel, which are highly brittle and provide a certain lubricating effect. As a result, the chips break easily, leading to high workpiece surface finish, reduced tool wear, and improved cutting speed.

 

 

Easy cutting steels can be classified into sulfur, lead, calcium, titanium, and composite types based on the different elements they contain. Depending on their specific applications, free cutting steels are further categorized as automatic steel, structural free cutting steel, and special free cutting steel (such as heat-resistant steel, stainless steel, tool steel). Based on their performance characteristics in easy cutting operations, they can be divided into general easy cutting steel and super easy cutting steel.

 

The free-cutting properties of metal materials are primarily enhanced by the addition of elements such as S, P, Pb, Se, Te , Bi , Zr , Re etc. The production of free-cutting steels has seen rapid development with an increasing number of varieties and grades along with a gradual rise in output.
