SAE standards are authoritative and widely used by the automotive industry and other industries, and a considerable part of them have been adopted as national standards in the United States.

SAE8620 corresponds to the national standard 20CrNiMo This kind of steel is suitable for machining gear, hardenability is better.

American standard 8620 is alloy structural steel.

Alloy structural steels are generally divided into tempered structural steels and surface hardened structural steels.

① Tempered structural steel: the carbon content of this kind of steel is generally about 0.25% ~ 0.55%. For the structural parts with a given section size, when quenching and tempering treatment (quenching and tempering), if it is quenched along the section, then the mechanical property is good. If it is not quenched, there is free ferrite in the microstructure, then the toughness decreases. For steels with tempering brittleness tendency, such as manganese steel, chromium steel, nickel-chromium steel, etc., tempering should be cooled quickly. The critical quench diameter of this kind of steel increases with the increase of grain size and alloying element content. For example, 40Cr and 35SiMn steel is about 30 ~ 40mm, and 40CrNiMo and 30CrNi2MoV steel is about 60 ~ 100mm. It is often used to manufacture shaft, connecting rod and other structural parts that bear large loads.

(2) Surface hardened structural steel: used to manufacture hard wear resistant surface and flexible heart parts, such as gears, shafts, etc. In order to make the core of the parts toughness is high, the carbon content in the steel should be low, generally 0.12 ~ 0.25%, and there is an appropriate amount of alloying elements to ensure appropriate hardenability. Alloying elements (such as Al, Cr, Mo, etc.) that are easy to form nitrides should also be added to nitriding steel. Carburized or carburitriding steels, after carburizing or carburitriding at 850 ~ 950℃, are quenched and used at low temperature tempering (about 200℃). Nitriding steel after nitriding treatment (480 ~ 580℃), direct use, no longer by quenching and tempering treatment.
