M35 High speed steel plate

M35 cobalt high-speed steel, when compared to lower-priced alternatives that are easier to process, can achieve exceptional hardness (HRC 67-70) and elevated red hardness (HRC 63-65 at 625°C for 4 hours) through appropriate heat treatment. It also exhibits superior wear resistance while maintaining toughness and bending strength comparable to standard high-speed steels, effectively mitigating issues such as edge collapse and cracking in molds.

The primary characteristic of M35 high-speed steel is its cobalt content, which enhances its performance as a universal cutting tool die steel with quenching hardness ranging from 1200°C to 1240°C. Its main applications include hobs, broaches, and end milling cutters.

Standard comparisons include: AISI-M2 and JIS-SKH51.

Factory conditions involve spheroidizing annealing below 225°C.

Features and Applications: This tungsten-based high-speed steel is ideal for manufacturing tools that require both wear resistance and impact resilience for robust cutting operations. It is suitable for advanced punching dies, screw dies, tools necessitating toughness in complex shapes, reamers, milling cutters, iron heads, punches etc.

Forging temperature ranges from 1100°C to 900°C.

Annealing involves heating the material to between 800°C and 850°C; it should be held at this temperature for approximately 2-4 hours before cooling within the furnace.

Cooling mediums may include air cooling or oil quenching followed by grading at temperatures between 550°C and 580°C.

Soft Annealing
Heat to 820-880oC, cool slowly in furnace. This will produce a maximum Brinell hardness of 230-300.

Stress Relieving
Stress relieving to remove machining stresses should be carried out by heating to 650oC, holding for one hour at heat, followed by air cooling. This operation is performed to reduce distortion during heat treatment.

Hardening
Heat to 450-600oC, preheat to 850oC and then to 1050oC. Harden from a temperature of 1210-1250oC followed by oil, air quenching or warm bath 550oC. Hardness after quenching is 64-66 HRC.

Transformation temperatures: Ac1=824oC , Ac3=853oC.

Tempering
Tempering temperature: 3 x 1 hour at 540-570oC.
